On June 15, BAIC Group held an online press conference entitled ‘BLUE Plan’, announcing that it will further advance new energy and smart networking technologies, and produce a full range of green and low-carbon products for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Its goal is to achieve peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2025 and complete decarbonization of all products by 2050.

According to Zhang Xiyong, the general manager of BAIC Group, the ‘BLUE Plan’ represents 4 concepts: B(Belief) refers to the concept of low-carbon; L(Life) indicates the better life; U(User) refers to the user orientation; E(Ecology) refers to the green ecology over the entire lifecycle of manufacturing.

With the ‘BLUE Plan’, BAIC Group will take actions primarily from the four aspects to meet the 'dual carbon’ goals.

First, reducing the carbon dioxide emissions on products. This will be achieved by completing the transition of the whole series of new energy products from the oil-to-electricity platform to the new platform, speeding up the electrification process of the power system, accelerating the launch of hybrid products, promoting the application of high-efficiency engines and developing a new platform for hydrogen-fueled heavy-duty vehicles.

Second, reducing the carbon dioxide emissions on technology. For new energy vehicles, they will promote the application of platform-based solid-state power battery systems and rapid battery heating technology. In the field of traditional vehicles, they will build HEV, REEV and RE-HEV platforms to achieve a 30% fuel saving rate. Meanwhile, through adopting lightweight, green materials and recycling technologies, the proportion of green materials will reach 5% by 2025, and 8% by 2028.

Third, reducing the carbon dioxide emissions in manufacturing. This will be achieved by accelerating the application of carbon reduction technologies and utilization of renewable energy, as well as promoting the low-carbon technology. It is expected that BAIC Group will build one or two zero-carbon factories by 2025, and finish the replacement of all high-efficiency equipment by the end of 2030. At that time, its carbon emission intensity index is expected to reach the international advanced level.

Finally, reducing the carbon dioxide emissions in low-carbon ecology. BAIC Group will implement the circular economy in multi-aspects, including the recycle and reuse of the automobile waste materials, the remanufacturing of auto parts and the building of second-hand car markets, etc.

As of 2020, the total mileage of BAIC's pure electric vehicles has reached 18.3 billion kilometers, which saves 1.94 million tons of energy, equivalent to planting 11.37 million trees. In terms of green manufacturing, BAIC Group has 17 national-level green factories and 2 green supply chain enterprises, ranking first in the industry.

As a leading enterprise in China's auto industry, BAIC Group actively responds to national 'dual carbon' goals and resolutely implements the sustainable development strategy. The '‘BLUE Plan’' is of great significance in promoting the green and low-carbon development of the automobile industry. It will make a great contribution to the realization of the 'dual carbon' goals of the whole society.
